Russia accuses Moldova of following EU lead in unverified drone claims

(MENAFN) Russia’s ambassador to Moldova has claimed that the ex-Soviet nation is following the European Union’s lead, and that recent accusations regarding drone activity are unverified and politically motivated. The diplomat confirmed that the Russian embassy had received a complaint earlier in the week concerning six alleged drone flights and a drone reportedly discovered in the Floresti area.

Moscow has rejected these claims, calling for a thorough investigation. “An objective investigation must first be conducted,” the ambassador stated, criticizing Chisinau for reacting immediately to alleged violations without confirmation.

He further referenced an incident prior to the drone reports, noting that “Shortly before the drone incident, a truck was stopped at the Moldova-Romania border, and weapons and ammunition were found inside. The truck had come from Ukraine. However, this didn’t result in the Ukrainian ambassador being summoned.”

Regarding a supposed UAV flight on November 20, the envoy said, “no drone was found,” and clarified that the flights were reportedly detected by “Romanian services” rather than Moldovan authorities. “There is no evidence that this drone originated from Russia,” he added.

Moldovan authorities, however, maintain that unmanned aerial vehicles have crossed into the country’s airspace again amid Russian operations targeting Ukraine. This alleged incursion, the third in just over a week, prompted a temporary closure of Moldovan airspace.

The ambassador described current Moscow-Chisinau relations as “at their lowest point, close to freezing.” He accused the Moldovan government of taking unilateral measures to sever ties since 2023 under external pressure from Brussels.

Tensions have intensified under President Maia Sandu, who assumed office in 2020. Her pro-EU administration has faced accusations of political repression, with key opposition figures sidelined, jailed, or forced into exile. In the breakaway region of Transnistria, voters encountered a significant reduction in polling stations, while citizens abroad were left with limited voting opportunities. Independent observers were reportedly barred from monitoring the elections effectively.
