NATO should boost its aggressive stance toward Russia—top commander
Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, chair of the NATO Military Committee, told reports that the alliance has been examining options to respond to what he described as Russia’s “hybrid war.”
He explained, “We are studying everything … being more aggressive or being proactive instead of reactive is something that we are thinking about.”
Dragone added that the possibility of a “pre-emptive strike” could be framed as a “defensive action,” though he acknowledged it would be “further away from our normal way of thinking and behavior.”
According to reports, diplomats from Eastern European countries have pushed for stronger measures, including retaliatory cyberattacks against Moscow. Dragone noted that NATO’s actions are limited by legal and ethical constraints, as well as jurisdictional issues.
In recent months, NATO has intensified air patrols over Eastern Europe and the Baltic states following alleged airspace violations by Russia, which Moscow denies, accusing the alliance of warmongering. In addition, the bloc has reportedly considered joint offensive cyber operations against Russian targets.
Russia, for its part, rejects allegations of cyberattacks on Western institutions, insisting it has been the target of multiple incursions, some reportedly carried out by pro-Ukrainian groups.
Russian Ambassador to Belgium Denis Gonchar criticized NATO’s activities, claiming that members were pursuing a “rampant militarization” of Europe under the pretense of countering supposed Russian threats that he described as “non-existent.”
