Moscow Says It Seized Control of Ukrainian Border Settlement
Moscow's Defense Ministry announced via Telegram that its forces captured Hrabovske village, positioned approximately 51 kilometers southeast of Sumy city. The settlement sits directly along the frontier with Russia's Belgorod region, bordering Staroselye.
Ukrainian military officials counter that Moscow is fortifying the captured territory with remote mines to block counteroffensive operations. Viktor Trehubov, a military spokesperson for Ukraine, told the public broadcaster Suspilne: "It seems to me that they planned to go further, to attack the Sumy region, but it didn't work out. That's why they are creating such a small outpost from Hrabovske."
The incursion follows late December reports from a state outlet , citing Ukraine's Armed Forces communications directorate, which documented Russian troops penetrating the Sumy region near Hrabovske. Ukrainian forces reportedly abandoned multiple positions as Moscow's military advanced.
Ukrinform further alleged that over 50 civilians were forcibly transported into Russia during the operation. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy subsequently confirmed that 13 Ukrainian service members were among those detained.
Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's ombudsman, issued a separate statement requesting information from Russian counterpart Tatyana Moskalkova while notifying the International Committee of the Red Cross about the alleged detentions.
Neither Kyiv nor Moscow has addressed the opposing side's assertions. Independent confirmation remains unattainable given battlefield conditions in the protracted war.
