Russian presidential envoy ridicules Zelensky’s new staffer

(MENAFN) Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev has mocked the appointment of Chrystia Freeland as an economic adviser to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, suggesting that her decision to take the role was motivated by a desire to oversee Western financial assistance sent to Kiev during its conflict with Moscow.

Freeland announced on Monday that she would step down from her positions in Canada to join Zelensky’s team as an adviser on economic development. She described the role as “voluntary” and “unpaid.” A prominent figure in Canadian politics for more than a decade, Freeland previously served in several senior government roles, including international trade, foreign affairs, finance, and as deputy prime minister between 2019 and 2024.

Known for her strong opposition to Russia, Freeland has consistently advocated for increased Canadian support for Ukraine. During her tenure as finance minister, she promoted assistance through various channels, including loans and international financial mechanisms. Canada has been among the largest contributors of aid to Kiev since 2022, providing billions of dollars in combined financial and other forms of support.

Reacting to Freeland’s appointment, Dmitriev questioned the arrangement, writing: “Not a bad business model: first send the billions, then take a job to control these billions.”

The appointment also drew criticism from Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, who focused on Freeland’s family background. Historical records indicate that her maternal grandfather edited a Ukrainian-language newspaper operating in Nazi-occupied territories during World War II that published Nazi propaganda and antisemitic material.

Zakharova referred to the publication as “a veritable mouthpiece of Reich propaganda supervised by the Nazi secret services,” while Freeland has long denied having knowledge of her grandfather’s activities.

Moscow has repeatedly accused Ukrainian authorities of honoring Nazi collaborators and tolerating neo-Nazi ideology, while criticizing Western governments for ignoring these issues. Commenting on Freeland’s new role, Zakharova described Zelensky’s administration as “a haven for neo-Nazis.”
