Russia’s Shadow Fleet Tanker Captain Released from French Detention

(MENAFN) French authorities have released the detained captain of an oil vessel believed to be part of Russia's covert shipping network, officials confirmed Wednesday.

The Marseille prosecutor's office disclosed that the commanding officer of the tanker Grinch was freed from detention Monday, media reported.

The 58-year-old Indian national had been held since Saturday evening on suspicion of fraudulent flag registration, following a French naval interception of the vessel last Thursday.

"The investigations, carried out by the maritime gendarmerie under the authority of the Marseille public prosecutor's office, are ongoing," the prosecutor's office stated in an official release.

French President Emmanuel Macron revealed Thursday that naval forces had intercepted a petroleum transport vessel in international Mediterranean waters, originating from Russian territory and suspected of sanctions evasion.

"We will not tolerate any violation. This morning, the French Navy boarded an oil tanker coming from Russia, subject to international sanctions and suspected of flying a false flag," Macron posted on the social media platform X, owned by the American company.

The investigation into the vessel's operations continues as authorities examine potential breaches of international maritime regulations and economic restrictions targeting Russian entities.
