Russia Arrests Suspects in General’s Assassination Attempt
On Friday, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, the first deputy chief of Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), was shot three times in the back outside his home and hospitalized.
In a statement on Sunday, the FSB identified the alleged gunman as 65-year-old Russian citizen Lyubomir Korba, who was detained in Dubai and transferred to Russia. The agency also named alleged accomplices, including Viktor Vasin, 66, detained in Moscow, and Zinaida Serebritskaya, 54, who reportedly fled to Ukraine.
The FSB released video footage showing the alleged gunman leaving the site of the attack, discarding what appeared to be a silencer-equipped pistol in the snow, and boarding a bus.
Another clip shows FSB operatives escorting a face-blurred suspect from an aircraft.
Commenting on the incident, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called it a “terrorist act,” adding that it “once again confirmed the focus of the [Vladimir] Zelensky regime on constant provocations aimed... at disrupting the negotiation process.” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga denied any involvement by Kiev in the attack.
