Russia Is Open to EU Dialogue, Rejects ‘Position of Strength’ Approach

(MENAFN) Russia says it has not shut the door to engagement with the European Union but considers interactions “from a position of strength” unacceptable, according to reports.

“We never closed the door on them. We said that it is unacceptable to communicate with us from a position of strength, that we cannot be treated rudely, and that no one can interfere in our internal affairs,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Tuesday.

Zakharova claimed that several EU countries are forced to follow a “command-and-control system” led by NATO, while simultaneously attempting to maintain bilateral ties with Moscow.

She singled out Hungary as “the most striking example” of this dynamic.

Turning to Ukraine, she dismissed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s “Napoleonic plans” to achieve a “strategic defeat” of Russia, arguing that those efforts have failed. She further alleged that Kyiv has resorted to “vengeance” tactics following what she described as a “crushing defeat,” insisting that its objectives “are not destined to be realized.”

Relations between Russia and the EU have deteriorated sharply since the outbreak of war in Ukraine in early 2022, with escalating sanctions, diplomatic limitations, and harsh rhetoric on both sides. Moscow has consistently emphasized that it is willing to engage in dialogue, but only on the basis of equality and mutual respect.
