Russia Confirms It Will Not Attend Washington Peace Council Meeting

(MENAFN) The Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday that Russian officials do not plan to participate in the first meeting of the Board of Peace, scheduled for February 19 in Washington, presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

“No one from the Kremlin is planning anything,” Peskov told Russian media outlet, adding that the proposal for the meeting is currently under review by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The gathering, initially reported by international media citing invitation letters, is expected to act as both a leadership summit and a fundraising event for rebuilding the Gaza Strip, part of an initiative launched by US President Donald Trump.

While the Russian Foreign Ministry previously described the broader peace initiative as a “positive development” for its focus on ending violence and addressing humanitarian issues, Moscow maintains that more work is needed to tackle the underlying causes of regional instability.

In a related announcement, the press service of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko confirmed that, although he received an invitation, he will not be attending.

On January 22, representatives from 19 countries signed the Charter of the Board of Peace on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The Board was established as part of efforts to achieve a peaceful settlement in Gaza, and Washington has stated that additional countries have since joined. The first meeting in Washington will be held at the leadership level, with fundraising for Gaza’s reconstruction as its central focus.
