Moscow Warns of Global Risks Due to US-Israel Attacks on Iran
The strikes, carried out on Saturday, were described by US President Donald Trump as operations intended to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program and pursue regime change. In retaliation, Tehran launched counterattacks targeting both Israeli sites and US military bases in the region.
Moscow has called on the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency to provide an unbiased evaluation of what it terms “reckless actions aimed at disrupting peace, stability and security in the Middle East,” according to the Russian Foreign Ministry. The statement also warned that the US and Israeli moves risk pushing the region toward “a humanitarian, economic and potentially nuclear catastrophe.”
Russian officials argue that the US appears intent on removing the leadership of a nation that has resisted coercive pressure and global dominance. The attacks came after indirect nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington in Geneva ended without agreement on Friday, coinciding with a significant US military buildup in the region.
The ministry further cautioned that these strikes could undermine global non-proliferation efforts and might trigger “uncontrolled escalation” in the Middle East and beyond, as countries may rush to acquire more destructive weapons to ensure their own security.
On Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by phone with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi regarding the strikes. Lavrov urged an immediate cessation of hostilities and expressed Moscow’s readiness to offer diplomatic support, while Araghchi expressed gratitude for Russia’s backing.
